Bison
Once there were millions of bison on the prairies of the United
States and Canada. They were hunted for their meat and skins, and
nearly wiped out. The few that are left are now protected in
reserves and zoos. Bison are often called buffalo. In the spring,
the animals shed their shaggy coats that protect them from the
winter cold. Growing as large as 6 feet tall and weighing over
1,800 pounds, male bison have small horns but heavy heads that are
supported by their large shoulders and neck muscles. The female
bison is much smaller. She usually has one baby (calf) a year in
the spring, although sometimes twin calves are born. The calf stays
with its mother until the following winter when it has learned to
live on its own.
